You Shouldn’t Have to Educate Your Therapist
Affirming therapy for LGBTQ+, queer, trans, and nonbinary adults throughout Washington and Oregon.
Finding a therapist should not mean wondering whether you will be understood. You deserve a space where your identity is not questioned, debated, or treated as a problem to solve. Therapy can be a place to explore, heal, and grow without having to explain why your experiences matter.
What Affirming Therapy Should Feel Like
Affirming means affirming — not neutral. Affirming therapy is not just a label. It is a way of practicing that recognizes gender diversity, queer identity, and lived experience as valid parts of the whole person, not side issues to be tolerated.
For many LGBTQ+ people, therapy has to begin with a basic question: Will I be safe enough here to tell the truth?
Soma Roots Therapy was built with LGBTQ+ clients at the center, not added as an afterthought to a general practice. Here the goal is not to help you become more acceptable to others. The goal is to support you in building a more trusting relationship with yourself.
Decolonial and anti-oppression, by design. The rigid two-box gender system so many of us were handed is itself a colonial export — cultures around the world held expansive understandings of gender long before that, and many still do. So when we talk about your gender, we're not measuring you against a "default" that was always more political than natural. We also name the real systems pressing on you — transphobic legislation, medical gatekeeping, family rejection — instead of locating the problem inside you. Your distress is frequently a sane response to an unjust climate.
Your gender, your pace, your call. Maybe you know exactly who you are and want support with everything around that. Maybe you're somewhere in the beautiful, valid middle of figuring it out. Both get the same respect. We move at the pace of your nervous system, not a milestone schedule — and you stay the expert on your own life the entire way.
You Are Not Too Much
If you have spent years shrinking yourself, masking, over-explaining, bracing for rejection, or wondering whether your needs are too much, those strategies likely came from somewhere.
Therapy can help you make sense of those patterns with compassion rather than shame.
