THERAPY IN PORTLAND
Why we see Portland clients by video
Three reasons video tends to fit how people here actually live.
____________________________________________
You get the hour back
No bridge traffic, no circling for parking, no rebuilding your day around a 55-minute session.
____________________________________________
Access beyond a few neighborhoods
Affirming providers cluster in a handful of close-in areas. Video means where you live or work in the metro stops deciding who you can see.
____________________________________________
Your own space, your own terms
Sit on the floor, hold the dog, keep the lights low. Most people settle faster somewhere familiar than in a waiting room.

SERVING OREGON
Portland, and everywhere else in Oregon
Telehealth means the whole state, not just the neighborhoods that have therapists in them.
Across the metro
Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Gresham, Lake Oswego — no drive, whichever side of the river.
The rest of Oregon
Salem, Eugene, Corvallis, Bend, Medford, and the coast, where affirming providers are hardest to find.
What you actually need
To be physically in Oregon during session, and a private-enough place to talk. That is the list.
The grey months
Winter is when leaving the house is hardest. Telehealth means the season doesn't decide whether you make it to your session.
Cost and insurance
In network with many insurance plans offered throughout Oregon, a few sliding-scale spots, and superbills if we are out of network.
Support beyond therapy
Local peer, crisis, and mutual aid options live on the Resources page. Therapy is not the only thing that helps.______________________
PORTLAND QUESTIONS
Questions worth asking before you start
The practical questions that come up before a first session.
-
No. Anywhere in Oregon works. You need to be physically in the state during session, which is a licensing rule rather than a preference of ours.
-
We don't and that's on purpose, not because we couldn't find the office keys. Soma Roots Therapy is fully telehealth. Every session happens over HIPAA secure video, whether you're in Portland, Beaverton, Bend, or your car in a Fred Meyer parking lot because it's the only quiet spot you could find (been there).
So while we love Portland and work with folks all over Oregon, there's no couch to sit on and no waiting room with the sad little water feature. You meet with us from wherever you already feel most like yourself. For a lot of people, especially those navigating chronic illness, disability, caregiving, transportation, or the simple math of Portland traffic, that's not a downgrade. It's the whole point of care that actually meets you where you are.

In Oregon, we're in-network with:
Aetna
Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS)
Cigna
First Choice Health Network (which includes some Kaiser NW and PacificSource plans)
Moda
Optum
Providence
United
A gentle-but-important nudge: insurance is a labyrinth designed by people who've clearly never had to use it, so please confirm with your plan that we're covered before our first session. We'd rather you not get a surprise bill that undoes all the nervous-system work.
Not seeing your plan? You still have options. We offer superbills for out-of-network reimbursement, and we hold a limited number of sliding-scale spots based on need and life circumstances, because cost shouldn't be the thing that keeps you from care. Self-pay rates are $270 for the intake and $245 for a 55-minute session, with HSA/FSA cards welcome.
One straight answer so you're not left guessing: we are not credentialed with Medicaid (including the Oregon Health Plan) or Medicare, and we don't plan to be.
-
Yes. If you're in Oregon and pursuing gender-affirming surgery, we provide WPATH-informed assessments and write the letters your surgeon or provider needs, and we do it without gatekeeping.
You are the authority on your own gender. Our job isn't to interrogate you or hand out permission slips; it's to understand your goals, make sure you have the information you need, and write an honest, thorough letter that moves you forward. No proving yourself, no "are you sure?", no jumping through hoops that exist only to make a system feel comfortable at your expense.
If you're reaching out specifically for an assessment, let us know and we'll walk you through what the process looks like, timelines, and cost (sliding scale is available for these too).

More common than you'd think, and absolutely not a dealbreaker. Between roommates, family, thin walls, and small kids with excellent hearing, "a quiet room with a closed door" is a luxury a lot of people don't have.
A few things that work: joining from your parked car, taking the session on a walk with earbuds, using a white-noise app or a fan outside the door, or sitting in a corner of the house with headphones in. Some folks book from a private spot at work on a break. And if you ever need to type instead of talk during a hard moment that's fine too — the work bends to fit your life, not the other way around.
If privacy is a real barrier for you, tell us. We'll problem-solve it together before it gets in the way.
